Overview
The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with the basic skills needed to create on-line research studies. We will focus on some basic issues, such as obtaining access to a web server, creating web pages in HTML, collecting data with web pages, writing Perl scripts to process and save data on the server, and how to import the data into popular statistical packages. We will also discuss advanced topics such as randomizing the order of stimuli, random assignment to conditions, creating customized feedback for subjects, ethics, and security.

I think the PowerPoint files that I'll be using in the workshop are pretty much finished. You can download them on the downloads page. Please feel free to print them and bring them with you.

If you plan to bring a laptop with a wireless card to the workshop, APS has sent us some directions on how to configure your computer to log in to their network. You may want to print these and bring them with you. Wireless Access directions.doc. [MS Word document]

I've added the first draft of the PowerPoint files that I'll be using in the workshop to the downloads page. If you won't be bringing a laptop to the workshop, you might want to download and print these files so you can take notes. You'll also want to print some of the code for the HTML and Perl files we'll be discussing, but I'm still revising those too, so wait until a day or two before you leave town to print anything.

I would like to get to know a little bit more about everyone who is registered for the workshop so that I can ensure that I'm covering topics that will benefit people the most. If you have 5 minutes to spare, I would appreciate it if you completed the on-line survey at the following link: Workshop Participant Survey.

During the workshop I will show you how to conduct research using a web hosting company called Netfirms. To use Netfirms, you will need to set up a free Netfirms account. It would be best if you did this before the workshop, if possible. Please check out the following page for instructions on how to obtain a free Netfirms web account, as well as updates on some useful (and free) programs that are available for download that will make your web-study-construction experience easier: Downloads.

I will be posting additional information about the workshop on this web site the week before the workshop takes place. I am hoping that participants can download some useful files ahead of time so we can get the most out of our time together at the workshop.

APS has managed to obtain wireless Internet connections in room at which the workshop will be held. Please bring a laptop that has a wireless Internet card if you want to get the most of out this workshop. (If you don't own one, you might want to borrow one from a friend or colleague.)
